First Gresham Masterclass of 2019 to Look ‘Beyond Brexit’

Brexit remains the word on everyone’s lips.

What will the outcome of negotiations be?

How will the UK economy be affected?

What will be the impact be in the short and long term?

At this stage, there are still more questions than answers.

With so much continued uncertainty, our next Masterclass will look beyond 29th March at the impact that different outcomes may have on the UK stock market. In particular, on the back of escalating trade tensions, fears over a slowdown in global growth and currency fluctuations, we will be looking at smaller UK companies (small caps) as an opportunity to achieve positive investment returns.

Taking place on Wednesday 6th March, Beyond Brexit: Are UK Small Caps Entering a Bull Market? will look at several factors that have the ability to impact different categories of stocks, and the influence of recent global events on volatility across markets.

New Event: Property vs Pensions

If you’ve been in the fortunate position to have money to invest for your future, you may have considered whether a property or a pension would deliver the best return. Whilst many people like the tangible nature of property, pensions too have an important part to play with a view to long term planning.

Although property has enjoyed a good run over the last decade, the introduction of the Stamp Duty surcharge, new restrictions on tax relief and the potential for interest rate increases in the months and years ahead combine to make investing in rental property a less attractive proposition than it once was.

Over the same period of time, pensions have fallen into the spotlight as an investment vehicle; particularly with the flexibilities offered under ‘pension freedoms’.

In association with Pro Manchester, Becky Sugden and Daniel Ardern of Gresham Wealth Management will address the topic of property vs pensions over the course of a breakfast seminar. Taking place on Tuesday 24th April, the session will look at the area of long-term investing, focusing in particular on property vs pensions and the relative benefits and drawbacks of both approaches.

The presentation will also cover:

  • Different types of personal pensions available
  • Commercial property and how this can be purchased by a pension
  • How pensions and property can be used to complementary effect to accumulate wealth and meet retirement needs & requirements.

Key Event Information

Date: Tuesday 24th April

Time: 8:00 am

Place: Gresham Wealth Management, Cecil Court, 28-36 Cecil Road, Hale, WA15 9PB

Let’s Talk About Tax…First Masterclass Topic for 2018 Announced

When it comes to pensions and investments, the rules surrounding taxation are particularly complex. Due to the ever-changing investment landscape, investors need to be aware of the differences when accumulating and decumulating wealth to provide for their retirement. In particular, the order in which wealth can be accumulated and decumulated within different tax wrappers can result in significantly different tax outcomes. Failure to plan correctly could leave investors with a far bigger tax bill than necessary.

To help explain the complex rules around taxation and investments, we’ll be joined by John Makin, Senior technical manager at Standard Life. John’s presentation, entitled: ‘Minimising Tax and Maximising Income’, will look at the optimal route to follow when in the ‘accumulation’ phase and the ways tax liability can be reduced when drawing down from investments. John will also cover the areas that frequently catch investors out, looking at how effective planning can help to make the most from an investment portfolio whilst minimising overall tax liability.

Event Details

Our first Masterclass of the year will take place on 21st February. There will be two events during the day – a breakfast session starting at 8am and a lunchtime session starting at 12 noon.

‘Minimising Tax and Maximising Income’ will be held at Gresham Wealth Management’s offices on Cecil Road, Hale, Altrincham.

Gresham to Speak at Forthcoming Chamber Event

Gresham Wealth Management has been announced as the headline speaker at the first Altrincham and Sale Chamber event of 2017.  The seminar, which will form part of the ‘Breakfast Matters’ event on 12th January, will be delivered by Becky Sugden, Chartered Financial Adviser. During the session, Becky will take the opportunity of the dawning of a new year to look at financial planning strategies to set you off on the right foot for the year ahead.

The session will give a useful overview of steps that can be taken in the short, medium and long term and will also provide attendees with five financial planning considerations to take away and potentially take action on.

Becky commented:

“The start of a New Year is the ideal time to reflect and make plans for the year ahead. Just as we make resolutions for other aspects of our life, so too should we make plans for our future finances. It is important to recognise that even small changes can cumulatively make a big difference – everyone has to start somewhere.

“With so much volatility and change recently in the political and economic spheres, now is a particularly good time to take a fresh look at the best approach for you and your money.”

The event takes place on Thursday 12th January at the Cresta Court hotel in Altrincham, starting at 8:30am and running until 10:00am.

As the first Altrincham and Sale Chamber event of 2017, the session, which also includes networking and breakfast rolls, is expected to have a strong turnout. The monthly Breakfast Matters events are always well attended by business owners and professionals from the local area, regularly achieving attendance levels of over 60 people.
