New Event: Property vs Pensions

property vs pension basic

If you’ve been in the fortunate position to have money to invest for your future, you may have considered whether a property or a pension would deliver the best return. Whilst many people like the tangible nature of property, pensions too have an important part to play with a view to long term planning.

Although property has enjoyed a good run over the last decade, the introduction of the Stamp Duty surcharge, new restrictions on tax relief and the potential for interest rate increases in the months and years ahead combine to make investing in rental property a less attractive proposition than it once was.

Over the same period of time, pensions have fallen into the spotlight as an investment vehicle; particularly with the flexibilities offered under ‘pension freedoms’.

In association with Pro Manchester, Becky Sugden and Daniel Ardern of Gresham Wealth Management will address the topic of property vs pensions over the course of a breakfast seminar. Taking place on Tuesday 24th April, the session will look at the area of long-term investing, focusing in particular on property vs pensions and the relative benefits and drawbacks of both approaches.

The presentation will also cover:

  • Different types of personal pensions available
  • Commercial property and how this can be purchased by a pension
  • How pensions and property can be used to complementary effect to accumulate wealth and meet retirement needs & requirements.

Key Event Information

Date: Tuesday 24th April

Time: 8:00 am

Place: Gresham Wealth Management, Cecil Court, 28-36 Cecil Road, Hale, WA15 9PB

Let’s Talk About Tax…First Masterclass Topic for 2018 Announced

tax

When it comes to pensions and investments, the rules surrounding taxation are particularly complex. Due to the ever-changing investment landscape, investors need to be aware of the differences when accumulating and decumulating wealth to provide for their retirement. In particular, the order in which wealth can be accumulated and decumulated within different tax wrappers can result in significantly different tax outcomes. Failure to plan correctly could leave investors with a far bigger tax bill than necessary.

To help explain the complex rules around taxation and investments, we’ll be joined by John Makin, Senior technical manager at Standard Life. John’s presentation, entitled: ‘Minimising Tax and Maximising Income’, will look at the optimal route to follow when in the ‘accumulation’ phase and the ways tax liability can be reduced when drawing down from investments. John will also cover the areas that frequently catch investors out, looking at how effective planning can help to make the most from an investment portfolio whilst minimising overall tax liability.

Event Details

Our first Masterclass of the year will take place on 21st February. There will be two events during the day – a breakfast session starting at 8am and a lunchtime session starting at 12 noon.

Gresham to Speak at Forthcoming Chamber Event

Becky Sugden, IFA Manchester

Gresham Wealth Management has been announced as the headline speaker at the first Altrincham and Sale Chamber event of 2017.  The seminar, which will form part of the ‘Breakfast Matters’ event on 12th January, will be delivered by Becky Sugden, Chartered Financial Adviser. During the session, Becky will take the opportunity of the dawning of a new year to look at financial planning strategies to set you off on the right foot for the year ahead.

The session will give a useful overview of steps that can be taken in the short, medium and long term and will also provide attendees with five financial planning considerations to take away and potentially take action on.

Becky commented:

“The start of a New Year is the ideal time to reflect and make plans for the year ahead. Just as we make resolutions for other aspects of our life, so too should we make plans for our future finances. It is important to recognise that even small changes can cumulatively make a big difference – everyone has to start somewhere.

“With so much volatility and change recently in the political and economic spheres, now is a particularly good time to take a fresh look at the best approach for you and your money.”

The event takes place on Thursday 12th January at the Cresta Court hotel in Altrincham, starting at 8:30am and running until 10:00am.

As the first Altrincham and Sale Chamber event of 2017, the session, which also includes networking and breakfast rolls, is expected to have a strong turnout. The monthly Breakfast Matters events are always well attended by business owners and professionals from the local area, regularly achieving attendance levels of over 60 people. Five Reasons to Attend our Professional Masterclass

#Masterclass

Over the past 18 months, Gresham has held a series of Masterclass events aimed at educating fellow professionals across a number of topics related to investment and the financial services industry. The seminars have attracted a great deal of interest and so far we have welcomed over 100 professionals from across the North West through our doors.

Having reached this milestone and with the next event on 19th October approaching fast, we thought we would take a look back over the masterclasses held to date and provide five reasons why professionals should consider attending future events.

Education

The original purpose of launching our masterclasses was to give solicitors, accountants and tax advisers a greater insight into the often perplexing world of financial services. The format of the events was developed to educate those in the professional community, broadening their horizons as to the factors influencing financial planning and investments. In turn, we hope this will provide information to take forward in their everyday dealings with clients and potentially use to benefit their own circumstances. With this in mind, we have covered a variety of topics, mixing them up throughout the year. Previous sessions have covered as diverse a range of topics as pensions, inheritance tax, oil prices and Brexit.

Gain valuable insights from industry experts

For each session, we bring in an external speaker to present, providing an excellent opportunity to gain insight directly from experts in their field. Topics are chosen based on requests from attendees and a relevant and engaging speaker is secured thereafter. Past speakers have included leading individuals from the following organisations: Jupiter Asset Management, Standard Life, JP Morgan, Unicorn Asset Management and Lombard International Assurance.

Earn CPD points

CPD is a necessary evil for many professionals. So why not earn points whilst doing something valuable with your time? With each of our sessions counting for 1.5 CPD points, you can gain 4.5 points from attending our three masterclasses held throughout the year. What’s more, the sessions are free to attend, so the only investment needed is your time.

Network with fellow professionals

With up to 20 people at each event, we get a nice mix of professionals from near and far attending the sessions. The numbers are deliberately capped at this size in order to promote discussion and interaction throughout the event. To make the networking time even more appealing, we even feed you! Depending on the session you attend, you’ll get a catered breakfast or lunch, including healthy options for those of us watching the waistline!

Choose the time slot to suit you

Due to the ever increasing popularity of our masterclass events, we now offer two slots from which attendees can choose. For the early birds, we have a breakfast session which starts at 8am or alternatively, there’s a lunchtime slot starting at 12 noon. From start to finish the events only last 2 hours, so you can be away and back to your desk within no time!

Don’t just take our word for it…

We’ve received some excellent feedback from our previous sessions. Past comments from attendees have included: “great presentation, very relevant”, “very engaging and informative”, “extremely strong presenter, remarkably insightful and well delivered” and “excellent, just perfect”.

For more information about the next Gresham Masterclass, to be held on 19th October 2016, or to get your name added to our database for information about future events, please contact us here.

  • CPD training for professionals

Gresham Wealth Management is one of the few financial planning firms in the North West that are registered to deliver CPD training. Committed to supporting fellow professionals with their ongoing professional development and understanding of key financial planning measures, our team have delivered training to over 350 accountants and solicitors in the region. Not only do these sessions help to keep you and your team ‘in the know’ on current legislation, they also help to identify potential benefits to your firm and your clients. Get in touch with us to discuss arranging a tailor made session for you and your team.
  • Keyman Protection

The death or prolonged illness of a key employee can put your business under financial strain. Keyman insurance compensates a business for the financial loss brought about by death or long term illness of a key employee.

It provides a valuable cash injection to the business which can help with a potential loss of turnover and/or to provide funds to replace the key person.

  • Shareholder/Partnership Protection

One of the great risks of a partnership or limited company is that one of your colleagues may die, with their share of the business passing to someone else. That person may have little interest in the business or be unable to meet the requirements of running the business. Equally a partner or shareholder who suffers a serious illness may not want to continue in the business after treatment and look to be compensated for their exit from the business.

  • Personal Injury Trusts

Without a personal injury trust in place, you can lose entitlement to present and future means-tested state benefits, including local authority contributions to the cost of long-term care. We offer simple, jargon free advice to check if a personal injury trust is required on receipt of a claim, generally at no cost to you.
  • Retirement Planning

Retirement Planning is a complex area which means different things to different people. How you plan for retirement can be wide and varied, but it must be planned for well in advance.

You may have existing pension plans in place, like a company pension or personal pension plan or perhaps you’re just starting to save. Whatever your situation, Gresham Wealth Management Ltd can provide the right advice to create a retirement plan that’s tailor-made for you.

  • Client Testimonials

We are both very grateful for the time you spent with us in explaining various options. We certainly feel we now both have a much better understanding of our situation & the decisions which we need to consider moving forward.
With great thanks for all your reassuring attention over the last year. It means more to me than I can express in a few words.
Just a big thank you for all you have done for our family. We do appreciate it.
We feel we can phone at any time during office hours if we need anything clarifying. Our financial adviser knows our personal circumstances and is in tune with our goals and lifestyle. His advice has been and continues to be excellent.
Thanks again for your advice, you have given me the kick I needed to take control and I’m very grateful for that.
Thank you so much again for your time and brilliant advice.
You’ve solved that dilemma for me… Thank you for being so clear and honest as always.
Before I chose Gresham I spoke to a number of IFA’s but none of them gave me the same confidence I had when I spoke to Morven. Everything, both written and spoken, is explained in an easy to understand way. All my pensions have been dealt with extremely efficiently and I am very happy with the service I have received from everyone at Gresham.
I just want to thank you and your team so very much for all you do for me throughout the year. It is a real comfort to know that my investments are in such capable hands. I literally couldn’t do it on my own.
A very personalised service… All advice is tailored to my needs with great consideration to issues I may not have thought of myself. I feel confident about my future finances.
